Ladder lacing technique demonstrating creative ways to tie shoelaces with step-by-step instructions

Creative Ways To Tie Shoe Laces - Part I

At WildSage, we're excited to launch a four-part series celebrating the art of shoelace tying. Each segment will showcase five unique, stylish techniques to elevate your footwear with flair and originality. So be sure to check back for this weekly series! Here's Part I

🪜 1. Ladder Lacing (Streetwear Bold)

Look: Industrial, structured, and edgy—popular in high-top sneakers and combat boots.

How-To:

  1. Start from the bottom eyelets and go straight across, feeding the laces under both eyelets.

  2. Take each lace up the sides and over the next eyelet up.

  3. Feed the lace straight across to the other side, going under the vertical lace you just made.

  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 up the shoe.

  5. Tie at the top or tuck laces inside for a cleaner look.

🌟 2. Star Lacing (Statement Piece)

Look: A literal star across your shoe. Very expressive—great on white or bold-colored canvas sneakers.

How-To:

  1. Begin at the bottom eyelets, going straight across and in through the holes.

  2. Pull one lace all the way to the top right eyelet and thread it from underneath.

  3. Take the other lace diagonally across to the second-from-top left eyelet, and feed it from underneath.

  4. Cross laces over and under each other to form a five-point star, adjusting tension as needed.

  5. Tuck or tie laces once the shape is formed.

🏁 3. Checkerboard Lacing (Retro + Maximalist)

Look: Perfectly suited to Vans or flat sneaker styles. It looks complex but is surprisingly achievable.

How-To:
Requires two different-colored laces.

  1. Start with color A and lace it straight across the bottom.

  2. Work up the shoe normally using the crisscross method.

  3. Once done, take color B and begin weaving horizontally over and under the vertical sections of color A.

  4. Adjust the weave until it resembles a checkerboard.

  5. Tuck or knot both lace ends.

👻 4. Hidden Knot Lacing (Minimalist Cool)

Look: Sleek and neat—ideal for clean sneakers or dress shoes.

How-To:

  1. Insert laces from the inside of the bottom eyelets (so they exit outward).

  2. Run the laces straight across the tongue and insert into the eyelets from the outside in.

  3. Continue straight-across lacing inward, hiding the lace between the shoe’s interior and your foot.

  4. When you reach the top, tie a knot on the inside and tuck it under the tongue.

🪢 5. Twistie Loop Lacing (Playful & Expressive)

Look: Spiraling loops down the shoe like DNA—fun and eye-catching.

How-To:

  1. Start with a normal crisscross lace through the bottom eyelets.

  2. As you go up, twist the laces around each other before threading into the next eyelet.

  3. Repeat the twist for each row—one or two twists per level.

  4. Finish with a bow or tuck under the tongue.
